What We Submit to HMRC (So You Don’t Have to Worry About It)

At Troy Accounting, we know our clients didn’t start a business, excited at the prospect of doing their accounts.

In fact, one of the most common things new clients say to us is, “I just want to know it’s all being done properly and on time.”

Which of course is exactly what we do.

But here at Troy Accounting we believe, that just because you aren’t doing your own accounts, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least have some understanding of what goes on with your accounts and what processes and activity surrounds what goes into remaining financially and legally compliant in your business.

In this article we’re talking about what actually gets submitted to HMRC on your behalf. Whether you’re a sole trader or a limited company, here’s a breakdown of what we prepare and submit to HMRC for you each year and why it matters.

If You’re a Sole Trader

As a sole trader, your business and personal finances are legally the same, so everything is submitted under your name.

Here’s what we do:

1. Your Self-Assessment Tax Return (SA100 & SA103):
We pull together all your business income, expenses, and any other relevant income sources and submit your tax return accurately and on time, every year. This tells HMRC how much tax and National Insurance you owe.

2. National Insurance Contributions (Class 2 and 4):
We calculate this as part of your tax return to ensure you’re contributing the right amount towards your state benefits and pension entitlement.

We also:

  • Check you’re claiming all the expenses and allowances you’re entitled to
  • Remind you of your tax payment deadlines (we know they’re easy to forget!)
  • Provide your SA302s and Tax Year Overviews which verify your income and tax liability.

If You’re a Limited Company

As a limited company, your business is a separate legal entity, so the paperwork increases slightly, but that’s where we step in.

Here’s what we manage for you:

1. Company Tax Return (CT600):
We prepare and file your tax return to HMRC, making sure your Corporation Tax is calculated correctly, and any available reliefs or allowances are used.

2. Statutory (Annual) Accounts:
These are the official year-end accounts we prepare and file with both Companies House and HMRC. These show your business’s financial health, often requested by mortgage lenders, funders, and grant bodies.

3. Confirmation Statement (CS01):
This is a simple document confirming your company’s details with Companies House. We make sure this is filed on time and up to date.

4. Director’s Self-Assessment (SA100):
If you’re a director, we’ll handle your personal tax return too, especially if you receive dividends or have income from multiple sources.

And as always:

  • We provide SA302s and Tax Year Overviews when you need them.
  • We explain everything clearly (no jargon here).
  • We make sure you understand what’s being submitted and why.

But why does this matter?

Aside from keeping you compliant (which is essential), these documents often play a starring role in:

  • Mortgage applications.
  • Business loans and funding.
  • Rental agreements.
  • Personal finance applications.
  • School or university forms that need household income details.

We’ve even had clients call us from estate agent offices or airport departure lounges needing urgent proof of income and we’ve had it sent before they finish their coffee.

With Troy Accounting you’re not just ‘told’, you’re empowered

We don’t just file things and leave you in the dark. We take the time to explain what’s being submitted, why it matters, and how it connects with your bigger business (and life) goals.

It’s your business, we just help you feel fully in control of it.

If you’re unsure whether you’re submitting everything you need to or just want the peace of mind that it’s all being handled properly, we’re here for that.

We’d love to invite you to have a discovery call with us. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure chat to understand where you are in your business journey, what support you might need, and how we can help you feel more confident and in control of your finances.
